Morning Jam: Beck “Dreams”

26 Jun

Thank goddess for whatever Tame Impala/Nile Rodgers inspired acid trip Beck was on at the time of writing his new single, “Dreams”, because this song is what my dreams are made of.

I could have lived off the heart and mind explosion his last album Morning Phase caused me, but I’m glad he’s back to kick it up a notch with this new single and ultimately new album. “Dreams” is out now on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon. Listen to “Dreams” via Spotify below.

Beck will be playing Nile Rodger’s FOLD (Freak Out Let’s Dance) Festival in Riverhead, NY on August 4th! I would love to see Nile Rodgers play the guitar part of “Dreams” at this festival…just throwing it out there Beck/universe (make this happen!). Get your tickets now here!

new music video: BRAIDS “MINISKIRT” + Philly show review!!

4 Jun

Braids by Cher Dunn mylifeinsound

Saturday night, BRAIDS opened the second sold-out Purity Ring show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, taking the stage after Born Gold. Although I’m sure most of the crowd was there for Purity Ring, I was buzzing to see BRAIDS again. I’ve been a long time fan and I really wanted to see and hear some of their new music live, and what an absolute gift that was. By the end of the show it was clear that most if not all of the Purity Ring fans at Union Transfer left a fan of BRAIDS as well, and rightfully so. BRAIDS played an absolutely moving set, and their new single “MINISKIRT” which they released a new music video for yesterday was one of the many highlights.

The opening bands that night had some computer/technical issues with their sets, and after condemning Apple for a few minutes, BRAIDS came back harder and more powerful than before. I’ve been seeing BRAIDS live for a few years now and it’s incredible to watch them grow as a band, writers, and performers. Not to mention, seeing three true friends having an absolute time with each other on stage added to their uplifting, moving and fun show. With soaring vocals, powerful lyricism, and epic instrumentals BRAIDS cut through the crowd and even had the drunk people in the back completely quiet and listening. The live set had me wanting their new album Deep in the Iris on vinyl immediately. The band played like they were the headliner and they easily could have been. The Born Gold, BRAIDS, and Purity Ring tour continues in Vermont tonight, for tickets and more tour information follow them on Songkick here.

Check out their video for “MINISKIRT” below and get their new album Deep in the Iris here.

morning jam: AVAN LAVA “Wanna Live” + Show Recap!

1 Jun

avanlava by solidstares

Wow. I don’t know what to say besides AVAN LAVA are an incredible band, in the studio and especially on stage.

When Avan Lava took the stage at Milkboy last Wednesday, I knew it was going to be good…but it wasn’t just good, it was fucking spectacular. The show started with full force and stayed that way all the way through. Playing most of their new album Make It Real (out now on Atlas Chair Records), the band showered us with confetti cannons, an epic light show, and synchronized dances. Thanks to the electric energy from the band, the Philly crowd got a dance workout worthy of Studio54.

Lead singer TC Hennes has an incredible, boundless voice that soaring whether he was dancing, jumping out into the crowd, or straight-up standing on his head doing yoga poses on the stage. You can tell that the band is having an amazing time together and the show becomes the ultimate dance party. The crowd did not want the show to end, and luckily the band agreed to an encore.

Avan Lava then ended their show strong with their cover of one of my favorite songs by Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. “Somebody To Love Me”. If you haven’t seen this band yet, make sure you are closely following them on Songkick to see when they are coming to your town. If you love to dance, it’s an experience you do not want to miss.

Buy Avan Lava’s new album Make It Real here!
