obsessed xx: The 1975 release new music video for “The City”!!!!!

25 Apr

The1975pic

What a great morning, to wake up and see this in my email. The 1975 released a gorgeous new video for their single “The City”, and as I expected I’m obsessed with it. Shot in black and white, the video features some breathtaking imagery of not only the band playing, but tiny stories played out by actors, some with moving projections of city life covering their skin. Their single “The City” is one of the incredible tracks from their self-titled upcoming album The 1975 due out (hopefully) this September. I seriously cannot wait for this record to come out. I need to make sure there is a vinyl with my name on it on my record player no later than October 1st…it will most likely be on constant rotation in my house from that point on (sorry I’m not sorry in advance housemates!). But until then, their next EP IV will be out May 20th! The 1975 will be back in the US to tour with The Neighbourhood! Both bands will be playing Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia on June 25th, tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon here!

obsessed xx: The XX “Together” for The Great Gatsby Soundtrack!!!

24 Apr

The XX

I am not going to lie, I have not been this excited for a movie for a long time. The Great Gatsby is due to be out in theaters May 10th, but I feel like I’ve been waiting a lifetime. The incredible novel is brought to life by Baz Luhrmann, the brilliance behind Romeo+Juliet, the 1996 film that gave me one of my first crushes (still going) the gorgeous Leonardo DiCaprio, and my favorite movie soundtrack of all time. I already know The Great Gatsby will live up to my expectations due to the fact that 1.) Leonardo DiCaprio plays Gatsby and 2.) the teasers for the soundtrack are already out of this world. Featuring new music from Florence and The Machine, Jack White and The XX, the new film is bound to be magical. Listen to the tracks below and check out the trailer!

Philly show NOT to be missed xx: Young Man at North Star Bar TONIGHT!!!

11 Apr

Young-Man

Tonight there is an absolutely epic, dreamy, night of music taking place at one of my favorite intimate venues in Philly, North Star Bar. Chicago’s brilliant Young Man, will be performing with Philly greats Mike Bruno & Black Magic Family Band and Gemini Wolf, as well as Florida’s Peace Arrow as support.

Young Man is on tour in support of their new record, Beyond Was All Around Me, out now on Frenchkiss Records (one of my favorite labels!). The album is the closing record in a trilogy by Young Man including 2011′s Ideas of Distance and 2012′s Vol 1. The album opens with an enchanting and soothing “It’s Alright” and leads into the upbeat, cheeky “Josie”, and gets absolutely real with the third track (and my favorite) “In Time”. “In Time” is 6 minutes and 59 seconds of absolute heaven… with story telling vocals Young Man is known for, glorious guitars and drums that will force you to dance, it’s impossible not to get lost in the track. The song reminds me of some of my favorite classic rock tracks including beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. “In Time” must be absolutely breathtaking to see live. The record is so addicting, I found myself starring every song in Spotify and had to stop myself out of pure embarrassment.

The show tonight is bound to be enchanting so make sure you get to North Star Bar at 8PM so you don’t miss any of the incredible bands playing! Tickets are only $10 and you can get them here or at the door tonight!

lovelovelove: C2C at TLA x See them at Coachella!!

11 Apr

C2C x Steph Lee

All turntablists are DJs, but not all DJs are turntablists – a clear-cut lesson I learned at C2C’s show last Saturday at TLA.  The lesson plan went a little something like this:

Four stoic French dudes appear behind a black rectangular block.  Lights turn off.  Lights turn on.  Four stoic French guys become four animated ones, hands now in action, beats slapping, scratching, bumping, thumping, and setting the crowd off in dance.  Their now lit-up rectangular block splits from one unit into two, then to four, and finally a vivacious two-on-two turntable battle erupts.  We dance.

I could barely believe it.  They were making all these sounds?  No computers.  No drums.  Just vinyl discs on a turntable, a love for rhythm, manipulated samples, and an amazing showcase of musical teamwork.  It reminded me of watching a pianist or violinist, fingers fluttering wildly and eyes down, but their shoulders punched to a hip-hop beat and our bodies punched right back.

I knew little about turntablism before getting the opportunity to check out C2C at TLA; turns out it’s an incredibly technical, funky, and fulfilling musical performance that’s equally impressive as it is fun.

C2C has won several international hip-hop and turntable competitions, earning them a reputation as one of the best crews in the world.  If you’ll be at Coachella, you can check them out at 1:30 in the Sahara Tent to finish off their North American tour.  Otherwise, keep an ear out for their latest album, Tetra, released in September 2012.

Haim-the-band-11

It’s my birthday!!! Today has been super busy at work but I am excited to go out and celebrate by seeing Local Natives tonight at Union Transfer with some of my best friends. This past year has been absolutely incredible, I can’t wait to see what this year will bring. I’ve been in such a good mood all day, my birthday soundtrack today has been pretty stellar. I can’t get enough of Haim’s “Falling” EP out now digitally and on vinyl! I’ve been listening to it over and over again today, and I love the Psychemagik and Duke Dumont remixes. These girls seriously seem to do know wrong. Their music always puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance, and listening to this EP at work is getting me super stoked about celebrating tonight. Listen below, have the best day ever and treat yourself today, because I told you to and it’s my birthday :)

and of course, what is a birthday post without my favorite birthday song.

Here is a poster my friend made me today, love it!! All my favorite men.

Hi.  I’m Steph.  From here on out I will be dropping some tracks (guest posting) on mylifeinsound for the one and only Cheryl Dunn (is fun).

SO.. A little about me: I like house music.  My audio affair with this genre began last summer in Japan when I was browsing a Gan-Ban record shop – Japanese still love to buy those little, shiny 4.75 inch things once known as CDs – when I came upon an album cover in a rose petal red, a hot chick lying back-arched by the pool.  Enter: Future Disco Presents: Poolside Sounds, Laidback Sunshine House.  Now come on, with that title can one resist?

What I heard on that compilation mix was summer in a bottle, silky yet hot, lethargic, intoxicating, pure, feel good house.  A year later, I look back on the featured artists and am surprised to find how many of them caught my ear on their own as I dug deeper into the genre.  The White Lamp.  Maya Jane Coles.  The 2 Bears.  Mario Basanov.  Poolside.

Well, that’s the story of my introduction to house music.  For those of you who haven’t yet gotten the chance to explore, perhaps it could be yours too.  Drink up some of my favorites from Poolside Sounds below.

Philly show NOT to be missed xx: Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen at First Unitarian Church!!!!

28 Feb

umo

Dream of all dreams!! Tomorrow night is the night that the brilliant and gorgeous Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen play their sold out show in Philadelphia at First Unitarian Church.

There are some bands that you just cannot deny. It was love at first listen for me with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Unknown Mortal Orchestra or UMO, as they are lovingly known by those too lazy to type or speak, have just released one of my favorite albums of this year, a follow up to their debut album cheekily entitled II through their new label Jagjaguwar. A perfect mix of psych rock, fun, and everything you love about your favorite classic vinyl, these three beautiful boys make some glorious music that your parents will probably love just as much as you (in the best way possible). While in the midst of a tour which will most likely sell out completely, Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be laying down their addictive tracks live to a packed house in Philly tomorrow night at First Unitarian Church. I am so stoked to check out their music live along with their support band Foxygen again later in Texas at SXSW. If you have tickets to the Philly show tomorrow I better see you with your dancing shoes on tight, and make sure you get there on time to catch the brilliant Foxygen opening. If you can’t see them in Philly check out the rest of their tour here and make sure you get tickets ASAP before they sell out!!
