obsessed xx: BANKS “Warm Water” co-written and produced by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs!!!

13 May

TEED & BANKS by mylifeinsound 2

BANKS released a gorgeous new track today co-written and produced by my ultimate music-crush Orlando Higginbottom (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs). “Warm Water” is a luscious slow jam featuring the uplifting beats synonymous with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs signature sound, addicting lyrics, and breathtaking vocals of Banks. This track further proves Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs can do absolutely no wrong, and Banks is a force to be reckoned with.

“Warm Water” will be available via iTunes (US/UK), Amazon and Spotify May 27th through Good Years Recordings.

TEED Cher Dunn 2013

In more brilliant news, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs will be coming to Philly for the first time, Thursday June 6, to play a DJ set at Morgan’s Pier.

Morgan’s Pier re-opened for the summer last Thursday and is offering a slew of incredible shows including this epic set from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. The show will be $5 at the door, but you can get your tickets in advance through Ticketfly here.

I met Orlando after having one of the best dance workouts of my life during his DJ set on a rooftop in Austin at SXSW in March. He told me about this show after I gave him a hard time for not ever playing in Philly, and I have to tell you I this show at Morgan’s Pier can NOT come soon enough. I fully plan on bringing every single one of my friends. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs will also be playing Governor’s Ball in NYC that weekend so make sure you see him live there as well!

Philly show NOT to be missed: Lovelife, Gold Fields, and Capital Cities TONIGHT at the TLA!!!

10 May

lovelife

This week has been a whirlwind of crazy and awesome. I saw Nile Rodgers on Sunday, The Breeders on Monday, Palma Violets on Wednesday, and The Veils and Lantern last night. Though I’m a bit exhausted, I’m completely stoked to see Lovelife, Gold Fields and Capital Cities at the TLA before heading to Maryland tomorrow for Sweet Life Festival!!

Lovelife are a synth-pop group formed by Lee Newell and Ally Young. The band features members of deceased UK band Viva Brother (formerly known as Brother) and they are now based out of NYC. The band has released two self-produced EPs, made their SXSW debut this year, and are now supporting Capital Cities on their US tour which stops in Philly tonight! Between Lovelife and Gold Fields, everyone at the TLA will get a major dance workout before Capital Cities even takes the stage.

You can definitely find me on the dance floor, hopefully dancing hard enough so everyone around me comes out of their shell and gets into the groove. If you go see live music, you should never be scared, shy, or ashamed to really take it in and give the energy the bands give to the fans, right back to them. It gives a whole new life to experiencing live music, and makes everyone have way more fun.

The show starts tonight at 8PM and you can buy tickets at the TLA box office!

Philly show NOT to be missed xx: Lantern and The Veils at Johnny Brenda’s tonight!!!!

9 May

the-veils

London’s The Veils are back with their first record in four years, Time Stays, We Go and will be at Johnny Brenda’s tonight to play some new tracks and old favorites live! Doors are at 8PM, the show is at 9PM and the tickets are only $12! You can get yours here or at the door. Philadelphia’s own Lantern are opening so make sure you get to the show on time.

The Veils new album,Time Stays, We Go, was produced by lead singer/songwriter Finn Andrews with the help of producer Adam Greenspan who has worked with Divine Fits and Arcade Fire. The band coerced retired English producer/legend Bill Price (The Clash, Jesus & Mary Chain) to mix the record to tape at Metropolis Studios in London, giving the record a unique and rich vintage sound rarely heard in music today. The album is a perfect mix of upbeat, raw, addicting tracks and dark yet soothing slow jams. The record is bound to sound epic live and I can’t get in on the action tonight at Johnny Brenda’s! If you don’t have it already, make sure to pick the record up at the show tonight, at your local record store, or here through their website.

obsessed xx: New track from The 1975 “Haunt // Bed” from their forthcoming “IV” EP!!!

8 May

The 1975 Logo

The1975pic

The 1975 released the gorgeous second track of their forthcoming IV EP, “Haunt // Bed” due out the 20th of May on Dirty Hit / Polydor in the UK. Hauntingly beautiful and slow dance ready, “Haunt // Bed” is five minutes and five seconds of pure heart-wrenching heaven. With a repetition of the phrase “I’m not scared” that gets stuck in your head and heart so quickly, the song feels like something you now know you needed in your life, without knowing anything was missing.

The 1975 have been selling out shows across the globe and rightfully so, I’ve seen them twice since March and I cannot get enough. They are touring the UK at the end of the month and coming back to the US in June to tour with another one of my favorite bands, The Neighbourhood. The boys will be stopping in Philly to play Union Transfer for the first time with The Neighbourhood on Tuesday, June 25th! I can’t wait! You can get your tickets for all tour dates below here, and make sure you do, because they are incredible live!

obsessed xx: Music video for Duke Dumont ft. A*M*E “Need U (100%)”!!!!

17 Apr

duke_dumont_essential_mix

I have to say for a song I love so, so, SO much…this is the best possible music video I could have ever seen for it. Follow the life of a man who swallowed a boom box, which unfortunately for him is playing “Need U (100%)” on repeat…leading everyone around him to dance maniacally while he tries to go about his normal life. Check out the hilarious video now, and make sure you see Duke Dumont on his short run of US tour dates, hitting Voyeur in Philly on May 16th!! See you on the dance floor!

Philly show NOT to be missed xx: Young Man at North Star Bar TONIGHT!!!

11 Apr

Young-Man

Tonight there is an absolutely epic, dreamy, night of music taking place at one of my favorite intimate venues in Philly, North Star Bar. Chicago’s brilliant Young Man, will be performing with Philly greats Mike Bruno & Black Magic Family Band and Gemini Wolf, as well as Florida’s Peace Arrow as support.

Young Man is on tour in support of their new record, Beyond Was All Around Me, out now on Frenchkiss Records (one of my favorite labels!). The album is the closing record in a trilogy by Young Man including 2011′s Ideas of Distance and 2012′s Vol 1. The album opens with an enchanting and soothing “It’s Alright” and leads into the upbeat, cheeky “Josie”, and gets absolutely real with the third track (and my favorite) “In Time”. “In Time” is 6 minutes and 59 seconds of absolute heaven… with story telling vocals Young Man is known for, glorious guitars and drums that will force you to dance, it’s impossible not to get lost in the track. The song reminds me of some of my favorite classic rock tracks including beautiful vocal harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. “In Time” must be absolutely breathtaking to see live. The record is so addicting, I found myself starring every song in Spotify and had to stop myself out of pure embarrassment.

The show tonight is bound to be enchanting so make sure you get to North Star Bar at 8PM so you don’t miss any of the incredible bands playing! Tickets are only $10 and you can get them here or at the door tonight!

lovelovelove: C2C at TLA x See them at Coachella!!

11 Apr

C2C x Steph Lee

All turntablists are DJs, but not all DJs are turntablists – a clear-cut lesson I learned at C2C’s show last Saturday at TLA.  The lesson plan went a little something like this:

Four stoic French dudes appear behind a black rectangular block.  Lights turn off.  Lights turn on.  Four stoic French guys become four animated ones, hands now in action, beats slapping, scratching, bumping, thumping, and setting the crowd off in dance.  Their now lit-up rectangular block splits from one unit into two, then to four, and finally a vivacious two-on-two turntable battle erupts.  We dance.

I could barely believe it.  They were making all these sounds?  No computers.  No drums.  Just vinyl discs on a turntable, a love for rhythm, manipulated samples, and an amazing showcase of musical teamwork.  It reminded me of watching a pianist or violinist, fingers fluttering wildly and eyes down, but their shoulders punched to a hip-hop beat and our bodies punched right back.

I knew little about turntablism before getting the opportunity to check out C2C at TLA; turns out it’s an incredibly technical, funky, and fulfilling musical performance that’s equally impressive as it is fun.

C2C has won several international hip-hop and turntable competitions, earning them a reputation as one of the best crews in the world.  If you’ll be at Coachella, you can check them out at 1:30 in the Sahara Tent to finish off their North American tour.  Otherwise, keep an ear out for their latest album, Tetra, released in September 2012.

Philly Show NOT to be missed xx: Magic Death Sounds presents Jamaican Queens tonight at House of Hayes!!!

29 Mar

Jamaican Queens

The weirdly wonderful boys of Jamaican Queens are playing tonight in Philly at House of Hayes for only $5 before 10pm/$7 after!!! There current single “Kids Get Away” is upbeat and danceable with very dark undertones. Singer/songwriter of the Detroit duo Ryan Spencer drew inspiration for the song from a vicious attack his friend suffered in Detroit:

“I wrote this song to myself as a reminder that I live in a very dangerous place and that I shouldn’t be so naïve. Violence is everywhere, and though I’m more likely to be victimized in Detroit than almost anywhere else, this city also has so much going for it that no other place I’ve ever been does. The possibility of violence is no reason to flee what I feel to be the best place I’ve ever lived. This song is a reminder to myself of that. Be careful, but don’t give in to fear.”

This smart, haunting but upbeat track is something I definitely want to hear them play live tonight. One of my best friends and I are going and I can’t wait to start the weekend off right with another dance party. The show starts at 8PM and also features Philly bands Rexedog, Meghan’s TV, and Charmaine’s Names! Click here for the official Facebook event and see you there!

lovelovelove xx: The 1975 at KFN recap / Free show tonight in NYC!!

29 Mar

Cher Dunn 1975 72

Last night was one of the most fun nights of my life. I go to a lot of shows, but this one in particular was special. Bringing 8 of my favorite people and meeting 5 more at the venue, I walked in to a nearly sold out Kung Fu Necktie last night just in time to catch Cruiser open for The 1975. I’ve never seen so many people at KFN for a show, a bit overwhelming at first, I was really fucking excited that one of my favorite bands right now were about to play in front of so many fans in my city. Once Cruiser ended we made our (tricky) moves to find our path straight to the front bit of space between the band and the crowd that awkwardly always seems to be there since people are scared to stand in front of the stage. My friends moved right in ready to dance and that we did, nonstop, for the entire time 1975 was on stage. Playing mostly new songs off their upcoming album, ever new track was a beautiful suprise, getting me so stoked for the new album it kills me I have to wait another day…for them to go back to London to finish recording it (fair). Although I was in my groove I did take a look around and couldn’t help but smile at all the people in the crowd, smiling, dancing, taking pictures like crazy. I am pretty sure everyone there had an incredible time, even the super drunk dude next to me that was falling asleep standing up, as I took liberty to shake him a bit and make him dance. The show ended after a decent time but way too soon for the audience. As they announced their last song sighs of crushed hearts poured out from the crowd, but luckily, they promised they would be back later this summer to play at Johnny Brenda’s on their tour supporting the brilliant band The Neighbourhood. For me, my friends, and all the fans at that show I think it’s safe to say that day can’t come soon enough, and same goes for their debut record.

Tonight The 1975 are playing a free show in New York City at Santos Party House!! For all you lucky kids in NYC this is definitely something you should be doing to start off your night tonight! They go on at 8:30 sharp so make sure you get there ASAP to make sure you get in before the venue is at capacity!
