afternoon jam: Kim Janssen “Gouldians”

26 Apr

unnamed-5

I saw Kim Janssen play a house show in West Philly about 8+ years ago and needless to say I was blown away. I’ve liked his music page on Facebook ever since but haven’t heard of him coming back to the US in some time. Today, I got an email with his name in the subject line and couldn’t be more excited to open it. Kim Janssen has announced the UK release date of his upcoming album Cousins due out May 12th!

The first taste of this new album “Gouldians” sounds like a musical diary entry, a stunning soundscape to soundtrack this gratuitous look into Janssen’s life. The track is a beautiful mixture of melancholy, nostalgic and uplifting. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.

Janssen was born in the Netherlands but raised in South East Asia, spending most of his youth in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Kathmandu. He says of the album:

“My new album ’Cousins’ is a personal account about looking back and growing older, about longing and displacement, spiritual doubt, dedication, and obsession. I grew up in Asia and I guess you create your own version of every place you’ve been in your memory; I like to explore this idea with music. Growing up over there also has an influence on my lyrics, especially on this record. To me it’s a pop album. I wanted to make an album that I would actually like to listen to.”

If “Gouldians” is any indication, Cousins is sure to be a gorgeous album and instant classic. Kim Janssen is set to play several shows in the U.K. following the release of Cousins including one of my favorite festivals in the world, The Great Escape in Brighton this May! You can purchase your tickets now here.

Bleachers

Jack Antonoff, one of our favorite creative minds in music, is back with new music via Bleachers! His anthemic new single called “Don’t Take The Money” released last week ushered in summer on the East Coast and already feels like the soundtrack of the summer. If this epic new jam is any indication of what the album, entitled Gone Now, is going to be like we want an advanced copy now. Antonoff officially announced the new Bleachers album is due out June 2nd, so here’s to pre-ordering as fast as you can!

“Don’t Take The Money” is out now and you can get your copy here! Bleachers will be touring for most of the summer starting with two sold-out dates in NYC and LA. See tour dates and ticket links below. Incubus “Nimble Bastard” + tour announcement!!!!!!!

16 Feb

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-1-15-11-pm

If you thought today was just going to be a normal day you were wrong. In fact, one day after celebrating the existence and creation of one of the most beautiful humans on the planet and everyone’s favorite renaissance man, Brandon Boyd, Incubus made it feel like our birthday as they released their highly anticipated new single “Nimble Bastard” this morning on KROQ.

brandon-boyd-birthday

Yesterday was Brandon Boyd’s birthday. Today with the release of Incubus’ new single “Nimble Bastard”, forthcoming album 8, and summer tour with Jimmy Eat World announced, it might as well be our birthday.

The new single from the forthcoming album, 8, (aptly named as it is their eighth album release as a band), hits hard with slaying, gritty guitars, deep, heavy bass, and blood-pumping drums reminiscent of A Crow Left Of The Murder and Light Grenades. Boyd’s vocals, like the band, haven’t aged a day, and they cut through the epic, raw, instrumentals straight to the heart like an electric shock. This is a windows down, volume up jam perfect for the summer tour they’ve just announced with Jimmy Eat World. That’s right, Incubus and Jimmy Eat World announced a ton of tour dates for this summer with Judah and the Lion. The tour will be stopping in Camden, NJ, on July 20th at the BB&T Pavilion! Pre-sale starts tomorrow, February 17 at 12pm (local time) except Dallas and the pre-sale password is nimble8. Dallas pre-sale is February 18 12pm (local time) with the same pre-sale password. Tickets will go on sale publicly February 24th! Tour dates are listed below. You can find dates, ticket info and get access to pre-sale information on Incubus’ website now here.

“Nimble Bastard”, the return of Incubus, and a tour with Jimmy Eat World?  What an absolute gift I feel like it might as well be my birthday! Listen to the new single below and get your tickets to every show on the tour here.

OOOH GIRL!!! Tash Sultana gives us all an “Electric Feel”

10 Feb

tash

Oooh girl! The singer-songwriter and looping artist, Tash Sultana, just made the most baby-making cover of MGMT’s classic “Electric Feel” for Triple J’s Like A Version. The mind-blowing cover is clearly just a snippet of what her live show is like. Thankfully, she is heading out on a US tour next week so we can see for ourselves!

Tash Sultana will be in Philadelphia next Saturday, February 18th, so my fellow Philly fans can watch her slay in person. She will be playing at World Cafe Live upstairs and the super-intimate show is unsurprisingly sold-out. If you were lucky enough to get tickets the show starts at 8PM and the doors open at 7pm. Make sure you get there on time to catch fellow Australian musician Josh Cashman open the show.

Listen to both artists and check out more tour dates for their US tour below!
