lovelovelove: so everybody put your best suit or dress on, let’s make believe that we are wealthy for just this once

31 Dec

“There would be no distance that could hold us back”

It’s that time of year again, a time to think about how awesome of a year it was, and how you want to make next year even better. I don’t think I really took the idea of making New Year resolutions seriously, until this year. I think whether you keep them or not, New Year resolutions are a good way to find out who you are, and who you want to be. Taking the time to think about these things will only help make your entire life better because you are working to make yourself happier, and when you are happy you have a better opportunity to make the people around you happy. So, what are my resolutions? Some of them, the classics if you will, are to take care of myself health-wise as much as possible. Starting with actually working out in the gym with the membership I have been paying for, of course this is in addition to my more regular (and fun) workout of dancing when I go out with friends. I want to give myself the time to read more, and I already started with an incredible new library of books I bought myself with gift cards from Christmas. I also want to give myself time to relax more, I hardly ever allow myself to slow down…which is fun, but not for my health or my need for sleep. I want to meet a lot of new people next year. I read in The Diary of Anais Nin: 1955-1966 that when Nin met Marilyn Monroe at a party, despite many people from the press being there, Marilyn Monroe showed up wearing no makeup and completely dressed normal, not dressed to the nines like other starlettes. Nin also said that Marilyn Monroe had such an incredible gift to give you all of her attention when talking to you, and making you feel like you were the only person in the room. I want to be like that. I want to be able to give everyone I meet my full attention, and really get to know people even when first meeting them. Although I did a great job of it this year, I want to go on more adventures, go to more shows, and continue to find new music to share with the world. Anais Nin said, “We have the right to select our vision of the world. It is important that our external reality expresses our inner reality, our character,”. Taking the time to think about who we are on the inside and making goals to better ourselves is only a great way to start the New Year. I will definitely try to keep all my resolutions, as well as make more over the course of the year. I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year’s Eve celebration! To end I would like to show you Woody Guthrie’s New Years Resolutions from 1942, as well as the super cute Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt rendition of “What are you doing New Years Eve?” (can Joseph Gordon-Levitt get any dreamier?).

Good goddess I am so glad The Subways are back. They fucking rock and I feel like everything I’ve been hearing from their new album Money and Celebrity is a youth anthem. obsessed xx: Au Palais “Tender Mercy”

26 Dec

I hope everyone had an amazing holiday! As a girl of simple pleasures, I was ecstatic to receive my annual Audrey Hepburn Calendar, Gustav Klimt Planner, favorite perfume, and chia pet herb garden (no joke, it’s so rad). But some of my top favorite gifts I received were the book “Le Freak” by Nile Rodgers (song writer extraordinaire to say the absolute least), a gift certificate to buy more amazing books, and my incredible sister gave me money towards buying a plane ticket to SXSW because she is the greatest person I have ever known. SXSW is my heaven, I want to go every year, but with the amount of money I owe in student loans, pretty much everything I make goes to that and rent. But even if it takes a yard sell of all my favorite things I want to go to SXSW every year. Most of my favorite bands play there, let alone my favorite bands that hardly ever get to America. The amount of incredible people I met and friends I made are worth every cent. I’ve dreamed about going back since I left, along with my best friend Jess, and I am saving as much money as I can every time I get paid to make sure it happens. I love my sister so much for her thoughtfulness and generosity, she has always been there for me and she is such an amazing person. I look up to her so much. Being with my family and getting to spend more time with my sister were definitely the best gifts I could have received. I am still at my parents for the day and I am really excited to relax for a bit today. I am writing my next post for Volcom which I am sure will be long because it is going to be about my love for SXSW in full and who I am excited for this coming year. Then I am wondering around the suburbs taking in the gorgeous weather, and of course going to the bookstore with a list of books I’ve been dying to get. Today, enjoy this gorgeous song “Tender Mercy” by brother-sister duo Au Palais. Their EP by the same name Tender Mercy is out now. They are also on one of my favorite named labels “The Sounds of Sweet Nothing” in London. I absolutely love that this is a brother-sister duo. Au Palais’ music is so awesome and I would love to see them live!

a very mylifeinsound Christmas ft. Nathan Fake, The Crookes, Fleet Foxes, Coldplay, & more!

25 Dec

There is something really special about being back in the suburbs for Christmas, seeing my family is obviously the most special, but I especially love how all the neighborhoods seem to be lit up. Especially the people that live for this and go all out with what seems like thousands of lights, giant Santas with a reindeer fleet, and lawn covered with whatever they could find resembling Christmas (some even have their own radio station channel that plays music when you drive by). By some Christmas miracle, (or potentially scary climate change reasons) it’s actually pretty nice weather here, which makes everything that much more lovely. I am truly looking forward to waking up tomorrow, eating breakfast with the family and opening presents while watching Elf, a movie in which no matter how many times my family and I watch it, we always cry laughing at the same parts. I am also looking forward to watching Home Alone again tomorrow, I’ve seen it 4 times already this month but it always gets me in the Christmas spirit (keep the change you filthy animal). I hope no matter what you celebrate or where you are you all have an absolutely lovely day and surround yourself with family or friends. There is so much to be thankful for, and even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, chances are some of your favorite bands are releasing new and free material ’tis the season! So I suggest you check out what your favorite artists are up to. Here are some of my favorite classic Christmas songs, and Christmas covers by some of my favorite bands:

I know many try, but no one should ever even attempt to cover this song, it is perfect. I love Wham! always and forever:

Absolutely chill and amazing version of “Silent Night” by Nathan Fake:

Fleet Foxes “White Winter Hymnal” – Just a classically beautiful song by Fleet Foxes, everything they do is perfect:

Love this video and song by The Crookes, plus I love a boy in a nice winter coat and Christmas jumper. Well done, boys. “It’s Just Not Christmas Without You”:

This song is so incredible, I’ve loved it for so long and true love lasts a lifetime. It also helps that it reminds me of an incredible scene in Home Alone, and that sax solo…come on! Too good, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree”:

I’ve been really sentimental lately for classic films and musicals I grew up on, thanks to my beautiful and amazing grandparents. I love hearing those get more airplay on the radio during the holiday season. My mom always loved Judy Garland as the Wizard of Oz has been her favorite movie since she saw it way back in the day. Although I would love to post the incredible Nicki & The Dove “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” from their Maida Vale session, I think the BBC has it on lockdown. So instead, and for my mom, I will post the beautiful and classic Judy Garland version:

I love Coldplay and their music so much. 5 years ago I was introduced to Oxfam America through Coldplay and their music. Oxfam a non-profit relief organization that works to end global poverty, hunger and social injustice. I have been volunteering with Oxfam ever since, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Coldplay released some Christmas live tracks including “Christmas Lights” and “White Christmas” exclusively for Oxfam:

Also, check out Star Slinger’s remix of one of my favorite songs right now Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris “We Found Love”. He released two remixes today including this one you can check them out here:

If I don’t hear this song on New Year’s Eve there is going to be some problems. Also, If you haven’t seen the gorgeously filmed epic music video for Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “We Found Love” check it out now:

Merry Christmas!
xx
