Legendary indie folk rock group, The Mountain Goats, recently performed at the iconic Pier 17 in New York City. The band, led by the charismatic singer/guitarist/pianist John Darnielle, brought out some deep cuts from their vast discography of work. And as their dedicated fanbase would tell you, their setlist can turn on a whim each night. Their setlist did not disappoint as it was full of nice surprises and fan favorites. The band opened with “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero,” a song that they have not brought out live on tour since 2015. They followed it up with “Same as Cash” from their latest album, Jenny From Thebes. The whole band kept the energy going all night, especially with Darnielle’s trademark wit and playful rapport with the audience between each songs. The night ended with one of my all-time live favorites, “Heel Turn 2.” Included in the show closer was crowd pleaser tune “No Children.”
