KING PRINCESS BRINGS ‘GIRL VIOLENCE’ TOUR TO BOSTON

King Princess, also known as Mikaela Straus, made a stop at Boston’s House of Blues on November 2nd as part of their ‘Girl Violence’ Tour, supporting their newly released album of the same name. The show drew a sizable crowd that clearly reflected KP’s dedicated fanbase, many of whom have followed KP’s career since their breakout single “1950” in 2018.

The Brooklyn-born artist’s latest record, Girl Violence, combines pop and rock influences with lyrics dealing with identity, self-perception, and an embracing of messy, queer love. Compared to earlier releases, this album leans more heavily on guitar and distortion, but not without holding onto the unique vocal melodies that have defined Straus’s work since the start of their career. The live production definitely matched that shift in tone — with an unfiltered stage presence and a graffiti-covered backdrop, to which KP adds each touring city’s name with spray paint at the end of every show.

King Princess opened with “Cherry,” which felt like the perfect amount of intensity. That feeling certainly carried through during “Jaime” and “I Feel Pretty.” The set was a comfy mix of new material and KP classics, including “Pussy Is God,” “Cheap Queen,” and the title track “Girl Violence.” Each song was met with loud, word-for-word participation from the crowd, and a reciprocated enthusiasm from KP on stage.

Before closing, King Princess invited a lucky fan on stage to take part in the growing tour tradition: spray painting the city’s name on the large graffiti billboard on stage. This closing tradition only goes to show how dedicated KP and her touring crew are to elevating the fan experience and creating an environment where music and celebrations of queerness can be celebrated in harmony.
