If Confidence Man comes to perform in your area, do yourself a favor—go see them. They continue to live up to their reputation as one of the best live acts on the planet, and after the nuclear electro-pop explosion they just unleashed in NYC, there’s no sign that the hype train surrounding them is slowing down anytime soon.
Typically a four-piece unit, Confidence Man performed as a mighty trio. Janet Planet and Sugar Bones commanded the stage with dual high-energy vocals, while a darkly veiled Reggie Goodchild (or was it Clarence McGuffie?) orchestrated the beats and samples from the shadows. (Not entirely sure who joined tonight—but honestly, preserving the mystique feels like the right move, just as the band intended.)
One thing is undeniable: their unrestrained, off-the-wall energy and onstage chemistry are unmatched. They moved, danced, and threw themselves into the performance with an infectious bravado that could coax even the most emotionally hardened introvert out of their shell. Their choreography, equal parts charming, chaotic, and high-octane, perfectly complemented their signature brand of addictive, feel-good club bangers.
It’s impossible to pick just one standout moment, but the back-to-back rush of “Control” and “I Can’t Lose You” was a definite highlight. And, of course, when Janet climbed onto Sugar Bones’s shoulders during “So What,” the crowd erupted into a euphoric, sweat-drenched frenzy.
Confidence Man delivers the kind of electrifying, no-holds-barred show the world desperately needs right now—a wake-up shot of pure energy. I can’t wait to experience it all over again.
