afternoon jam: Kim Janssen “Gouldians”

26 Apr

unnamed-5

I saw Kim Janssen play a house show in West Philly about 8+ years ago and needless to say I was blown away. I’ve liked his music page on Facebook ever since but haven’t heard of him coming back to the US in some time. Today, I got an email with his name in the subject line and couldn’t be more excited to open it. Kim Janssen has announced the UK release date of his upcoming album Cousins due out May 12th!

The first taste of this new album “Gouldians” sounds like a musical diary entry, a stunning soundscape to soundtrack this gratuitous look into Janssen’s life. The track is a beautiful mixture of melancholy, nostalgic and uplifting. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.

Janssen was born in the Netherlands but raised in South East Asia, spending most of his youth in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Kathmandu. He says of the album:

“My new album ’Cousins’ is a personal account about looking back and growing older, about longing and displacement, spiritual doubt, dedication, and obsession. I grew up in Asia and I guess you create your own version of every place you’ve been in your memory; I like to explore this idea with music. Growing up over there also has an influence on my lyrics, especially on this record. To me it’s a pop album. I wanted to make an album that I would actually like to listen to.”

If “Gouldians” is any indication, Cousins is sure to be a gorgeous album and instant classic. Kim Janssen is set to play several shows in the U.K. following the release of Cousins including one of my favorite festivals in the world, The Great Escape in Brighton this May! You can purchase your tickets now here.

Jack Antonoff, one of our favorite creative minds in music, is back with new music via Bleachers! His anthemic new single called “Don’t Take The Money” released last week ushered in summer on the East Coast and already feels like the soundtrack of the summer. If this epic new jam is any indication of what the album, entitled Gone Now, is going to be like we want an advanced copy now. Antonoff officially announced the new Bleachers album is due out June 2nd, so here’s to pre-ordering as fast as you can!

“Don’t Take The Money” is out now and you can get your copy here! Bleachers will be touring for most of the summer starting with two sold-out dates in NYC and LA. Morning Jam: Beck “Dreams”

26 Jun

ToyyPRh

Thank goddess for whatever Tame Impala/Nile Rodgers inspired acid trip Beck was on at the time of writing his new single, “Dreams”, because this song is what my dreams are made of.

I could have lived off the heart and mind explosion his last album Morning Phase caused me, but I’m glad he’s back to kick it up a notch with this new single and ultimately new album. “Dreams” is out now on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon. Listen to “Dreams” via Spotify below.

Beck will be playing Nile Rodger’s FOLD (Freak Out Let’s Dance) Festival in Riverhead, NY on August 4th! I would love to see Nile Rodgers play the guitar part of “Dreams” at this festival…just throwing it out there Beck/universe (make this happen!). Get your tickets now here!

Cruise into your Thursday on the chill, trippy, feel-good wave that is Swim Deep‘s new single “To My Brother”.

With this taste of new music from the band, you can really hear how their sound has evolved from the release of their debut album Where the Heaven Are We in 2013, and I love what I hear. “To My Brother” is available for download now on iTunes and Amazon and the single is streaming now on Spotify.

Misty Miller

Ladies, the struggle is real…and London’s Misty Miller created the perfect song to represent our woes in “Next to You”. Misty Miller co-directed and edited the video with Milo Edwards and filmed at her apartment, The Fox on the Hill, and “that Burberry acoustic bench in Wimbledon”. Watch the video for the song below. You can download the single for free now here!

Although she has no upcoming US tour dates yet, Misty Miller is playing Bushstock in London on June 13th! For tickets and more information click here!
