Show Recap: Gang Of Youths at World Cafe Live!

5 Jun

Gang of Youths are an Australia-based band of megababes (soon moving to London) that we just can’t get enough of right now. Our writer/photographer Sarah went to their World Cafe Live show last Friday for the first stop of the band’s American Tour.

After the successful release of the band’s debut album The Positions Gang of Youths head out on a 10 city tour across the US before heading back to Australia to tour and we couldn’t be more excited that Philly was their first stop. Playing World Cafe Live (upstairs) it was the perfect, intimate venue to see a band that performs at a stadium-worthy level. Blown away by their big sound and their signature brand of rock and roll, the crowd couldn’t help but be knocked out by their musically tight performance and raw energy. With hair flying and slaying riffs, the audience left the show ready to go on tour with the band just to experience the show again! Check out photos below and don’t miss Gang Of Youths on tour!

mylifeinsound at Made in America Day 2!! Photos + Review

5 Sep

Miguel by Cher Dunn

I was lucky enough to go to Made in America Festival in Philadelphia both days this past weekend, needless to say I am still recovering (and missing the fun!).

I went as a music fan Day 1 (which is all a blur of sweat, dance, and good times), and I covered Day 2 for Elite Daily! Below is an excerpt from my article with more photos. Make sure you read about the night of Made in America Day 2 featuring Calvin Harris, Queens of The Stone Age, and Nine Inch Nails, go to the article here!

The crowd for Made in America Day Two gathered in Philly and for some this was their first day at the festival. For others, well, we were still recovering from Day One, but everyone was excited for Sunday’s lineup. With some of the best artists in rock, rap, dance and R&B, there was plenty to see on that hot, sticky, sweaty finale of the Made In America weekend.

The most important thing was to stay hydrated and not to pass out before the epic finale, featuring the return of Nine Inch Nails. This proved to be difficult as the day went on. Music fans and artists couldn’t help but talk about how hot it was, while friends tried not to hug too close as they found one another in the crowd and their bodies poured with sweat.

The heat didn’t stop a giant crowd forming at the Freedom Stage ready to dance to Robert Delong. The electronic rock and roll artist took the stage wearing his famous face paint and even painted the face of the cameraman before the show began. While getting the crowd moving, he used clever tactics throughout his music, promoting his new album Just Movement and website without breaking the beat.

Delong also shamelessly advertised his nerdiness as he bragged about his Google Glass and proceeded to epically perform a song with them. Along with playing tracks off Just Movement, Delong also covered Filter’s “Take A Picture” and the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You.” Besides the energy of Delong and the crowd, the best part of the set had to be watching him play live drums along to his music; he really is a one-man rock and roll dance machine.

Next AlunaGeorge took the stage on their first American tour after the release of their epic debut album Body Music. This was the duo’s first performance in Philly and fans couldn’t be more excited. Bringing with them a talented live band, AlunaGeorge smoothly crushed through fan favorites including “You Know You Like It” and “Your Drums, Your Love.” Fans gathered more and more for each song, some running over to dance after hearing their music from across the parkway.

Mid-afternoon called for Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar to take to the main stage, overlooking a complete sea of people. Kendrick Lamar couldn’t help but smile as thousands of people immediately sang his lyrics back to him. To the excitement of the crowd, he brought out Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul to help tear through his good kid, m.A.A.d city album.

The heat didn’t cease all day and Miguel made it even hotter when he took the stage. Fans melted as his smooth, soulful voice took over the parkway. Miguel sang and turned up the temperature, as he gave fans a sneak peek of his abs.

Wiz Khalifa played the Rocky Stage after Kendrick Lamar, taking control of the huge crowd playing hits like “Black and Yellow” and even brought wife Amber Rose on stage to serenade her during “Roll Up.” The crowd was excited to see the newlyweds together on stage and the couple couldn’t keep their eyes off each other.

After Wiz Khalifa, fans ran to the Liberty Stage to catch Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Pumping up the crowd playing their tracks from The Heist including “Ten Thousand Hours” and “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis gave the crowd of thousands time to reflect. Macklemore told the crowd that sometimes he wasn’t always proud to be an American and realized the importance of reaching out to government leaders to make good changes for our country. He spoke of the importance of equality for all before starting a powerful performance of “Same Love,” which ended with the crowd of thousands watching. The crowd then held one finger to the sky, showing that they believed in equal rights for everyone.

myweekinsound xx: Update #1 ft. M83, and new music from Sun Airway!!!

3 Aug

My friends already think know I am a psycho when it comes to music I love. Not having someone to go to a show with? No problem, I’m going anyway. They are only playing 2 hours away in NYC on a work night? No problem, I’m going anyway. Pretty sure over the past 2 weeks I’ve gotten maybe 10 hours of sleep total. But as dazed as I am, my heart is the happiest it has ever been. This week started out with my trek to NYC to see Bombay Bicycle Club Monday night then Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Tuesday (post soon to follow), but Wednesday, originally thought to be my “night of rest” (yeah right, funny joke I just told) ended with me getting a last minute ticket invite to M83, one of my absolute favorite bands to see live (thanks Mute you fucking rock!!!).

I brought my roommate Dylana, we both had just saw M83 at Union Transfer and have been dying to see them again since, so we were lucky they decided to come back to Philly so soon to play The Electric Factory.

Dylana and I are both absolutely obsessed with the bassist of M83 (who we sadly learned obviously has a girlfriend, sorry ladies…) because he goes bananas on stage, has the best dance moves, and really knows how to play cowbell (among his other instruments: bass, keys, etc.) see below:

Before even going into the venue Dylana could not shut up about them hopefully playing “Sitting” and when the time came during the show we went nuts.

*Spoiler Alert* If you are going to see M83 for the first time or plan on it (as you should) do not read the following: I ran into another friend in the crowd who had never seen M83 live before, and I wish to God I had video taped her reaction when the jazz saxophonist came out on stage for the solo during “Midnight City” it was sheer double-rainbow status and could have easily been played by Kristen Wiig on SNL, “Oh my Goooooood, oh my Goooooood, look!! look at him!!! the jazz saxophone!!! ooh my Gooooood!! He is so good!! he has been waiting for this the whole show!!! This is his moment!!! This is it!!! This is what he has been waiting…he has been waiting this whole time!!!!” Serious tears in my eyes laughing at her reaction, it was such a beautiful moment to witness in someone’s life. Picture of the badass saxophonist here.

*M83 virgins start reading again here*:
Overall, the show, once again fucking rocked. Which is why, we couldn’t be more stoked to learn that Philly’s favorite dream band, Sun Airway, will be opening up for M83 in October in NYC.

Obviously, we are going (third time this year is a charm!). Sun Airway recently released a single off their upcoming album Soft Fall due out October 2nd called “Close”. I am fucking obsessed with it and the rest of the album. If Soft Fall was a man I would take his hand, drive to Vegas immediately and marry him. I could listen to it on repeat for the rest of my life and be happy. Soft Fall the perfect mixture of dreamy layered instrumentals, romantic lyrics, tracks to chill out to and tracks to dance to until the sun rises. I cannot wait to see them open for and entrance the unsuspecting fans of M83 into a captivating state of love. But don’t listen to me, listen “Close” and decide for yourself.
