During her first sold out show of tour, Katie Pruitt wowed the audience with a series of queer ballads and religious reflection that were delivered with a country-folk-like sound. Her vocals and musical prowess created an impressive performance indicative of another rising queer star.Ā

Even before the show began, the energy in the room at the Atlantis in DC was filled with quality music. As people filled the room, the pre-show playlist provided an enjoyable ambience. It seemed to be picked right out of my own personal playlist, from artists like Big Thief, Paramore, and Faye Webster, the audience happily sang along to this well curated list of songs.Ā

Opening the night was artist Jack Van Cleaf. His rich voice complimented his old country sound. His personality is charming and pairs well with his music. I spoke with him after his performance and he was very kind, humble, and personable.

Katie later remarked that they have formed a close relationship not only with her own band, but with Jack and his band as well. These friendships are evident in each band’s dynamic on stage, allowing the audience to join in on their fun and banter.

The crowd was respectful yet enthusiastic for both the opener and the headlining act. They cheered ferociously for Katies’ powerful belted notes, in addition to their impressive guitar skills. As a special treat for the crowd, the tour manager Hadley Kennary joined Katie on stage for a few songs, including a cover of “Casual” by Chappell Roan, earning even more excitement from the fans.Ā

As Pruitt continues to release new music, they dive deeper into the queer experience. This music touches audiences of all ages, as shown by her diverse audience, and creates its own community. These songs speak to the universal experiences of adolescence through a sapphic queer lens, appealing to a niche while still creating a welcoming environment.
