Exceptions Are Building Up For Dream Theater’s 40th AnniversAry Tour

Words by Logan Brannigan

Dream Theater’s 40th Anniversary Tour kicks off in the fall and I couldn’t be more excited. Even though there have been no U.S dates announced yet, my expectations have only gotten higher as the Europe dates continue to roll out. The tour is expected to feature songs from their upcoming album along with some fan favorites throughout their forty year career. It will also be the first Dream Theater tour to have Mike Portnoy behind the drum kit after his departure from the band in 2010.

Mike Portnoy, who is confirmed to be in charge of the setlist, has fans eagerly awaiting his selections. Personally, I am hoping to hear the “12 Step Suite” performed in its entirety. Portnoy played this suite during his “Shattered Fortress Tour” in 2017, but this anniversary tour would be the perfect opportunity to experience it with the original lineup. Aside from the “12 Step Suite,” I am open to hearing any songs from their vast repertoire.

While I have specific hopes for the setlist, what excites me most is seeing all five members on stage together after more than a decade. Their chemistry is unparalleled, and they remain masters of their instruments. For many fans, including myself, this will be the first time witnessing Dream Theater with Mike Portnoy back behind the drum kit. I was fortunate enough to see Portnoy drum on John Petrucci’s solo tour in 2022, but seeing the entire band reunited will be an unforgettable experience. For a band as exceptional as Dream Theater, their 40th-anniversary tour will undoubtedly be worth the wait.

You can catch Dream Theater on the international leg of their tour this fall!
