Right before the beginning of the concert, Sunday afternoon was greeted by pouring rain before tapering off to a drizzle, setting the scene for a cozier show at Best Video Film and Cultural Center. This intimate venue in New Haven, CT, felt like a Tiny Desk concert, creating the perfect setting for Jenny Parrott’s performance. The location holds special significance for Parrott, as she grew up in the area.

The opener for Parrott was local indie band Post Valley Green, a 3-piece ensemble. For reasons unknown, only two of the members (Jordan Nicholson – guitar and vocals, and Jared Schmidt – violin) were present. They performed tracks on their upcoming EP, Slow Dance, imbued with folk, country twang, and general Americana sensibilities. Their performance helped set the scene for a cozier, more intimate show for the afternoon.

Parrott, supported by Georgia Parker (bass) and Gary Newcomb (guitar), brought the tempo up with her set. Fun and upbeat, Parrott performed with her trusty omnichord, an electronic musical instrument. She would loop variations of pre-recorded tracks as the backdrop to her strong vocals. While this was primarily an album release tour for her latest work Love Spell, Parrott also performed tracks from earlier works in her discography. A popular track of the night was “Checking in on You,” a song about checking in on one’s friends. Overall, the concert proved to be a pleasant way to close out a peaceful Sunday afternoon in suburbia.
