Dream pop duo, Cults, closed out their tour in glorious fashion and delivered a beautifully layered performance to a sold-out hometown crowd in Brooklyn. I’ve been a long-time fan of Cults and their re-inventive style of lush indie pop—coyly mixing jangle pop, Motown, electronic music, and indie rock influences into an alluringly eclectic gothic amalgam—and they carry over this obsession visually into their live shows. This show was dripping full of moody nostalgic atmosphere, with psychedelic and colorful projection visuals shimmering across the stage—thematically fitting to Madeline Follin’s ethereal vocals and Brian Oblivion’s evocative sound design. They opened with “Crybaby,” a beautiful ironic track about domestic ennui and personal despair that captures the cinematic sensibilities of the band while perfectly setting the tone of the night. They also played one of my personal favorites, “Shoulders to My Feet,” as well as “Monolithic” and “Always Forever.” This show felt like euphoric dream state, and it will be one of my concert highlights of the year.
