In front of nearly 3,000 adoring fans at Hell’s Kitchen’s Terminal 5, Cuco threw a party with a no-opener, 25+ song set packed full of contemplative yet head-banging crowd-pleasers.
Cuco’s catalog, when listened to on streaming platforms or physical media, fits comfortably into the “vibey” realm of Spotify-era indie pop/R&B. However, experienced live, Cuco’s tracks transform into dynamic anthems, bolstered by a full-band accompaniment and thoughtful stage production. The music—and the crowd—was especially loud in the densely packed venue. Terminal 5 was so full at one point that Cuco himself paused to hand out water bottles in the pit. Amid the pounding drums and the soulful notes of Cuco’s trumpet, the playfulness that defines his music was never lost.
“Am I unc?” Cuco jokingly asked, commenting on the youthfulness of the crowd that came to witness his set. Reflecting on love and reminiscing about adolescence, Cuco rocked out in New York, with a crowd more than willing to join him in the fun.
