The Get Up Kids Celebrate 25 Years of Something to Write Home About

The Get Up Kids celebrated 25 years of their iconic album Something to Write Home About with a sold-out show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, as captured by photographer Sarah Puleo on September 27. The connection to the audience’s youth was undeniable, as the crowd sang along to every word—shouting the verses and providing the beautiful “ahhhh” backing vocals during the choruses—proving the music from 1999 is unforgettable.

The band—featuring Matt Pryor (vocals, guitar), Jim Suptic (guitar, vocals), Rob Pope (bass), Ryan Pope (drums), and James Dewees (keyboard, backing vocals)—delivered a performance full of the same infectious energy and heartfelt sound that made them influential in the first place. During the chorus of “Out of Reach,” Suptic noted that Philly fans were louder than in New York, which didn’t seem to surprise anyone in the room. The band expressed their gratitude to the loyal crowd, amazed that they could still fill a venue like Union Transfer after 25 years.

Having seen them play at the former-Boot and Saddle venue years ago, the larger space highlighted how their music continues to draw dedicated fans. Songs like “Ten Minutes” and “Action & Action” came alive with Rob Pope’s driving bass lines and Ryan Pope’s rhythmic drumming, while Dewees’ keyboard melodies added layers that have been key to the band’s sound since his addition in the late ‘90s.

The themes of love and growing up have taken on deeper meaning as the years have passed, and their performance showed these songs resonate just as powerfully today as they did two decades ago. Opening act Smoking Popes brought their own ’90s alternative style to the stage, adding to the night’s nostalgic atmosphere.

Something to Write Home About continues to hold a special place for fans, reminding everyone why The Get Up Kids’ music remains timeless.
