GWAR took over Philadelphia for one of their infamously blood-soaked shows while on their Stoned Age Tour. If you’re unfamiliar with GWAR and their outrageous performances, brace yourself—you’re in for a wild ride. They’re a legendary thrash metal band known for their provocative shock value, with roots stretching back to the late ‘80s. They’ve built a legacy not just through their hard-hitting albums but also through an elaborate fictional lore and a history steeped in controversy. Though their performances are clearly satirical, meant to push boundaries for the sake of spectacle, they’ve faced waves of criticism from the very beginning—and continue to do so today.

But a GWAR show is much more than just a concert; it’s an immersive theatrical experience packed with outrageous storytelling, and this night was no exception. The spectacle kicked off with exaggerated caricatures of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Primary candidates, Trump and Harris, bickering onstage—only to be interrupted by the announcement of a surprise third contender… GWAR. The band burst onto the stage in their signature larger-than-life costumes and battle armor, diving straight into their opening song while gleefully dismembering both Trump and Harris in a fountain of fake blood. Proclaiming themselves as the new Presidents of the United States, they quickly realize they’re hilariously unfit for the role. So, naturally, they turn to a time machine, resurrecting past Presidents in a desperate attempt to offload the job. What ensues is an over-the-top bloodbath filled with chaotic theatrics, heavy riffs, and dark humor.
The show is certainly not for the faint of heart, but for fans who crave a mix of shock value, high-energy music, and outlandish visual effects, it’s a good time. Amid the carnage and mayhem, GWAR’s signature blend of satire and absurdity delivered pure entertainment from start to finish. I found myself completely captivated—not just as a photographer, but as an audience member.

Photographing this show was unlike any experience I’ve had before. At times, I had to put down my camera just to take in the spectacle as a fan. Standing in the photo pit was a chaotic thrill: watching my fellow photographers get splattered in fake blood while being mere inches away from GWAR’s incredibly detailed (and impressively grotesque) costumes. It’s a night I won’t soon forget—a visceral, theatrical onslaught that blurred the line between concert and performance art.
