Show Recap: Gang Of Youths at World Cafe Live!

5 Jun

Gang of Youths are an Australia-based band of megababes (soon moving to London) that we just can’t get enough of right now. Our writer/photographer Sarah went to their World Cafe Live show last Friday for the first stop of the band’s American Tour.

After the successful release of the band’s debut album The Positions Gang of Youths head out on a 10 city tour across the US before heading back to Australia to tour and we couldn’t be more excited that Philly was their first stop. Playing World Cafe Live (upstairs) it was the perfect, intimate venue to see a band that performs at a stadium-worthy level. Blown away by their big sound and their signature brand of rock and roll, the crowd couldn’t help but be knocked out by their musically tight performance and raw energy. With hair flying and slaying riffs, the audience left the show ready to go on tour with the band just to experience the show again! Check out photos below and don’t miss Gang Of Youths on tour!

Laura Marling stuns fans at The TLA// Tour Heading to Australia

22 May

Our writer and photographer Sarah went to see Laura Marling and may or may not have cried. Okay, spoiler alert she did cry, and that’s because Laura Marling is a goddess and one of the best songwriters and performers of our time. Touring in support of her breathtaking new album Semper Femina, Marling stopped in Philly last Friday to perform at the TLA. Laura Marling is currently heading to Australia to continue her tour before heading back to the U.K. to play multiple festivals this summer. Read Sarah’s review of the show below and get your tickets to the rest of Laura Marling’s tour and to get your copy of the new album, click here.

The microphones and stage at the TLA were adorned with blue silk flowers and greenery when Laura Marling walked out into the spotlights on Friday night.  She appeared to be small and pixie-like in stature, completely unassuming, in a flower print dress. She and her backing band went immediately into, “Soothing,” and I was swaying back and forth.

I did not expect the magic that was to come next. This was my first experience with Laura Marling’s music. Her vibe is a country-folk sound, with beautiful melodies and powerful lyrics. She tricked me, I was ready for a lighthearted type jam. She began singing “Wild Fire,” and I was able to fight back tears until her lyrics sang, “Is there something on your mind? Something you need to get by? Do you cry sometimes? Do you cry sometimes?.” I cried. Terrifyingly relatable emotional truths and complicated but beautiful relationships between friends always hits home.

“You always say you love me most
But I don’t know I’m being seen
Maybe someday when God takes me away
I’ll understand what the fuck that means…”

She sings those lines in such a deadpan way- the power of it can be elusive, almost inviting you to push away the idea that it’s a song about emotional pains. By the time she got to her song “The Valley,” I was fully invested in hearing what she had to say. I trusted her, because she was singing about humans I felt I knew. What a beautiful feeling! Overwhelmed with emotion, I watched on to see her bare little pieces of soul.

A truly gifted song-crafter, Marling had me in her unassuming vices.  She is a voice for the emotions of the female relationship, ever-complicated, but powerful. A beautiful night- with running mascara, due to music moving my soul. Success!

afternoon jam: Kim Janssen “Gouldians”

26 Apr

unnamed-5

I saw Kim Janssen play a house show in West Philly about 8+ years ago and needless to say I was blown away. I’ve liked his music page on Facebook ever since but haven’t heard of him coming back to the US in some time. Today, I got an email with his name in the subject line and couldn’t be more excited to open it. Kim Janssen has announced the UK release date of his upcoming album Cousins due out May 12th!

The first taste of this new album “Gouldians” sounds like a musical diary entry, a stunning soundscape to soundtrack this gratuitous look into Janssen’s life. The track is a beautiful mixture of melancholy, nostalgic and uplifting. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.

Janssen was born in the Netherlands but raised in South East Asia, spending most of his youth in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Kathmandu. He says of the album:

“My new album ’Cousins’ is a personal account about looking back and growing older, about longing and displacement, spiritual doubt, dedication, and obsession. I grew up in Asia and I guess you create your own version of every place you’ve been in your memory; I like to explore this idea with music. Growing up over there also has an influence on my lyrics, especially on this record. To me it’s a pop album. I wanted to make an album that I would actually like to listen to.”

If “Gouldians” is any indication, Cousins is sure to be a gorgeous album and instant classic. Kim Janssen is set to play several shows in the U.K. following the release of Cousins including one of my favorite festivals in the world, The Great Escape in Brighton this May! You can purchase your tickets now here.
