They Might Be Giants Gives a One-of-a-Kind Show in DC

The line outside of the 9:30 club was wrapped around the block for over an hour after doors opened for night one of They Might Be Giants’ three-night run in Washington, DC. A fan could be overheard telling a friend that this was the first time they had seen this band since 1991! The group’s first album was released in 1986 and, since their debut, they have released over 20 studio albums. This impressive discography meant there was something for everyone as devoted fans, both new and old, buzzed with anticipation as they filled the venue and waited for the show to start. With no opener, They Might Be Giants out on a two-part show with a short break in the middle. On each night of their tour, the band plays a slightly different setlist, primarily focusing on one album each night. On this first evening in DC, they performed a selection of music from their album Mink Car, while still paying homage to their hits from other releases. 

The crowd erupted when the band came onto stage and quickly began hit songs such as “Birdhouse in Your Soul” and “Particle Man.” The audience danced and clapped along, keeping their energy high throughout the evening. The band, led by John Linnell, showed a clear love and joy for their music and performance, happily interacting and joking with the crowd.

Following the conclusion of their second set, They Might Be Giants began their encore with their hit song “Istanbul,” bringing the enthusiasm in the 9:30 Club to an all-time high. Each musician displayed their experience and impressive skill as the attendees hung on to every note. They used their wide array of instruments, such as an accordion and brass ensemble, to play a diverse setlist and maintain a jovial and energetic liveliness. Their charisma, talent and sincerity made the nearly three-hour night fly by.
