Empire of the Sun treated a sold-out Brooklyn crowd to a spectacular immersive experience

Empire of the Sun and their recent show at Brooklyn’s King’s Theatre showed not only that they still got the magic, but they have further elevated their live shows into a truly immersive spectacle full of dreamy colorful imagery landing in perfect harmony with their signature brand of electro dance pop.

Even after 8 years since their previous release, their highly anticipated new album, Ask That God, is evident that the duo, Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, has been more inspired than ever while staying true to their core vision and style with arguably their best work to date. They opened their live set with “Changes”, which showcases an effectively juicy baseline and Luke Steele’s mesmerizing vocals immediately hooking in their audience.

Then they followed it with one of my recent favorites, “The Feeling You Get”, a highly inspiring 80s disco dream trip that further set up the uplifting tone of the evening, and they did not let up—which included hard-hitting feel-good vibes from their newly minted tunes such as “Revolve”, “High and Low”, and “Music on the Radio”.

And an Empire of the Sun show is not complete without their elaborate use of creative stage design. With lush glossy visuals and revolving costume changes inspired by pulpy science fiction and religious/fantasy imagery, they covered a wide mystical tapestry of exotic, retro-futurist, and astral eastern motifs that maintained an unwavering spell on the crowd through the night. Their show was a celebration of the band’s enduring legacy and the dedicated fans that longed for their triumphant return of new anthems.
