Allie X brought a special reunion tour during this salty sea season to celebrate the five-year anniversary of her critically acclaimed sophomore album, Cape God. New York fans were able to experience Cape God in all of its full live glory this past weekend at the historic Webster Hall.
It has been a long time coming. Cape God, which was released in 2020, was one of the many highly anticipated tours of that year that inevitably became another unfortunate pandemic casualty and had to be postponed. In 2022, another attempt for a Cape God tour was cancelled due to illness (by the same autoimmune illness that inspired the album.) After 5 years, fans here in New York were rewarded for their patience as Allie X sounded even more mesmerizing than ever as she performed Cape God from front to back.
As Allie X opened the show gazing deeply into the beaming sky, birds chirping and sounds of nature whispering in the background. You could tell immediately that the night was gearing up to be both deeply personal and a uniquely elemental journey. She did not disappoint as she kicked it off with the “Cape God Theme.” She possessed the voice of an angel and a siren in equal measure, while her band not only kept up with her whimsical presence and dramatic energy, but together faithfully recreated the ethereal energy of the album this time, live.
By the time she performed “Love Me Wrong” during the mid point of the show, I was already a teary emotional mess. Just the way she nails those operatic ghostly high notes felt like such a beautiful gut punch that I know was felt by the entire audience. These emotional highs didn’t let up as she proceeded with “Susie Save Your Love” and “Learning in Public.” To close out the show, she performed “Off With Her Tits” from her 2024 album, Girl With No Face. This was such a fun, blistering way to close out the show.
