G Flip is a rare kind of performer. They don’t just stay in the center of the stage with one instrument or a microphone in hand; they’re everywhere all at once. It makes for a truly electrifying show. One moment they’re singing their heart out, the next they’re lighting up the saxophone, then they’re behind the drum kit doing double duty while singing, and before you know it, they’ve picked up a guitar, both electric and acoustic.

Their sound is that perfect kind of juicy pop that makes you want to dance around the room instantly. But there’s more than just bubblegum sweetness. It has a spicy edge, blending unexpected instruments and always driven by some of the tightest drum beats in the game. Every track hooks you in with catchy lyrics that make you want to sing along, jump around, and move with the rhythm.

The last time I saw G perform was at The Foundry, the small upstairs venue above The Fillmore in Fishtown, Philadelphia. To see them only two years later filling the main floor at Union Transfer, a space nearly three times the size, was incredible. One thing that hasn’t changed is how much G clearly loves connecting with their fans. The house rules remain the same, from number one, “Don’t be a dickhead,” to number eight, “Sing with me with your full chest.” No matter how big the crowd gets, the show still feels intimate.

A lot of the songs played came from their new album “Dream Ride” which while it only came out on September 5th of this year, everyone in the crowd knew the words and did indeed sing it with them with their full chests. Some older favorites were sprinkled in too, along with the love song they wrote about their now wife, “Be Your Man” which was featured on the 2023 album “Drummer”. They also covered “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift, which as a die-hard Swiftie, I loved and hearing it live I realized this might be the closest I get to hearing Taylor live.

Hearing it live made me realize this might be the closest I ever get to hearing Taylor perform in person.

Overall, it was a 10/10 rock show for the all-ages crowd (and I mean all ages — there were at least two kids in the audience and a few fans well over 60). While I do wish there had been a few more drumming moments from G themself, their performance truly shines on a bigger stage, where there’s more room to dance, connect, and go all out with their energy. I, for one, will jump at any chance to see and photograph G Flip whenever I can.
