This has been such a good week. I went to check my mail and found the new album from Big Deal, a duo from the UK I’ve been following since I heard their debut single “Chair” back in July. With only an electric and acoustic guitar Alice Costelloe and Kacey Underwood make soft, dreamy pop songs that are nostalgic, heartfelt and honest. Lights Out has such a dreamy and light sound, with epic overtones that makes me forget that there are only two people and instruments in the band. I adore the lovely and playful harmonies of Alice and Kaceys vocals. I absolutely love the songs I’ve heard before receiving the record, such as “Chair”, “Distant Neighborhood”, and “Homework”. But I am absolutely obsessed with the song, “Cool Like Kurt” with catchy and cute lyrics, “I’m all grown up, I swear it’s old enough. Take me to your bed, I don’t take me home, I want to be old, I want to be older…”, and the song “Talk” with the ever-so-relatable lyrics “All I wanna do is talk, but seeing you fucks me up…” and the heart wrenching repetition of “I don’t wanna hear about her”. Although the album seems to flow together effortlessly, no two songs sound the same, and they all have a distinct sound that can only be pinned as Big Deal. I feel like this album could not come out at a better time, it is a perfect winter soundtrack. I am so stoked for the rest of the world to hear this beautiful debut album from Big Deal on January 24th. They are a band I am super excited to see become huge in 2012. They are making their US debut in NY on March 11th and 12th, then heading to SXSW in Texas!! Big Deal is another band on my top list of bands to see at SXSW. Can March come faster please? Make sure you get Big Deal’s Lights Out coming out through Mute Records on January 24th!
