I fell in love with the music of Orlando Higginbottom (or Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs) when I heard his single “Trouble” in May 2011. After a year of pining over him and his music, hearing and obsessing over other singles he released including “Household Goods”, “Garden”, “Tapes & Money”, “American Dream Part II”, and “Stronger”, my heart nearly stopped when I learned his album was finally coming out early this month. When you are infatuated with five songs you know are on the same album, it’s safe to the assume the rest of the album is bound to be pure magic.
Let’s just say upon first listen of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs debut album Trouble, my first thought was “If this album were a boy, I would take him to Las Vegas, marry him upon arrival in a chapel, and then plan a more elaborate wedding for our families to attend in a field of sunflowers. But marriage is immediately necessary as I would be the happiest girl for the rest of my life”. The album has elements of everything I love: dreamy vocals, thrilling and climactic builds, and songs for love, lust, crushes, breakups, and overall dancing. The gorgeous intro track “Promises” draws you in with an airy, ethereal, and relaxing sound; soon progressing into a fun, epic, beach party with vocals immediately daring you to “go on set fire, burn up my night”. With so many incredible songs we haven’t heard yet on the album until now, it is easy to get lost in all 14 songs and impossible to not move to. The passion and love I have for these songs never seems to end no matter how many times I listen to them individually or with the album as a whole. Trouble which is exactly one hour long, is the perfect album to wake up to, get ready to, go out to, stay in to, work to, work out to, live and love to. Whenever any song off the album comes into my head a smile on my face appears.
I had the incredible opportunity of seeing Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs play in Brooklyn then DJ an after party and it was one of the best/ most fun nights of my life. Luckily, he is coming back to the US in August to play two dates in NY before heading to Lollapalooza, the west coast and Canada. Make sure you pick up your copy of Trouble at your local record store and see Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs in a city near you, your dancing shoes and heart will love you for life!
