Gothic avant-garde pop powerhouse, Allie X, provided much needed comfort and escapism to the DC crowd.
After her widely successful Girl With No Face tour earlier this year, Allie X welcomes us into her Weird World again making stops at additional cities. I made the calculated plan to attend her November 6 Washington DC show in hopes to celebrate hope and progress. But unfortunately as recent events have shown, the results didn’t go as we hoped. Her stop here though couldn’t have been more appropriate and timely as her fans of mostly LGBTQ+ and their allies alike needed her presence and music more than ever. “But fuck it, we are going to celebrate anyway! We are going to celebrate our community, our resilience, our fierce looks, and the color we bring to the world,” as she proudly rallies her crowd.
Allie X provided the escapism we desperately needed that night and delivered a powerhouse of a performance with her trademark dreamy pitch-perfect vocals reaching those glossy ethereal highs that pierce through haunting retro synth soundscapes, all while taking her stage visuals to new heights. She opened the show with her most famous track “Bitch” and with the rest of her set featuring mostly tracks from Girl With No Face, which to me is one of this year’s perfect albums. Hearing her latest single, “Bon Voyage”, live was one of the show’s standout highlights—this one hit me hard with a deep emotional spiritual resonance that harkens back to why I fell in love with her music in the first place.
This show was an enduring reminder why we need music and unique comforting voices like Allie X during these uncertain times.
