Magdalena Bay played to a full house this President’s Day in Fishtown, bringing the audience into their Mercurial World.

Montreal’s Cecile Believe (formerly known as Mozart’s Sister) opened the show with her dark, dancey, electropop tunes. Her latest EP Plucking a Cherry from the Void was released in November 2020. Cecile Believe is also known for her collaborations with SOPHIE, the prolific indie producer who died suddenly last year.

We’re living in a Mercurial World and I am a Mercurial Girl.
The title of Magdalena Bay‘s debut album Mercurial World is also the name of the universe they create through their music and visuals. Their show feels like a psychedelic version of the Y2K Disney Movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, about a girl who lives in outer space.
Adding to the futuristic yet nostalgic feeling, their show also featured a running storyline with “Chaeri,” the title of a song on their album and the name of an AI computer who slowly gains consciousness as the night goes on.
As Chaeri reflected on Magdalena Bay‘s music: “This song makes me feel something. This song makes me long for something I do not know.”
